To some, figuring out the correct exposure for a scene is rather difficult.

When i started on Film SLR’s, i over or under exposed every shot, a big waste of money, my judgments were way off. After that, whenever i was shooting with my film SLR- i carried my digital camera, and put it in the Automatic settings, and used the Info from that on my Film, of course the digital would have to use the same ISO. I got good shots that way, it’s quite time consuming though. After a while, i guessed, and guessed until it got it right. I always use the Manual mode on my Digital SLR, and most of the time i guess right- an occasional over/under exposure is to be expected.

If you’re using and OLD 35mm camera like my FG-20, there would be not little dial inside the viewfinder to tell you where you were on the exposure scale. It’s all guessing. It has an AUTO mode as well, which i used with Film a lot of the time. It’s not like digital, you can’t see your mistakes, and fix them. So, if it has an Automatic mode, i would just use that, you’ll still get Good images. Those old SLR’s don’t have AV mode, or TV mode, because that’s all controlled Manually via and Aperture ring, and there’s a Shutter speed dial. The Auto mode on the old SLR choose an appropriate shutter speed- you still choose the aperture.

If it’s a more modern SLR camera, there should be a little scale in the viewfinder, with a -2 +2 0 +1 -1 Something like that, the correct exposure is 0 if it’s on either side it won’t be correct. If it’s recent, it should have on in the viewfinder. If it doesn’t, the best method is practice, at least it was for me.

Silver is used in black and white photographs because of this.

Photographic film contains silver compounds in a gel. When the shutter lets in light this gel breaks down as above and makes an image. The unchanged silver halide is washed away with sodium thiosulphate and the negative produced is developed to produce a black and white photograph.
