What should I include in this letter?

I am 17, and my half brother who is now 33 with two kids and a wife, lives 2 states away from me.

We both love art, writing, photography, etc, but he is busy climbing the corporate ladder while I am merely a senior in high school.

I recently reached out to him and confided in him that I greatly admire him and look up to him and expressed a desire to become closer with him. We agreed to write letters to each other, and I decided to start.

I have no idea what to include in this letter. Any ideas, tips, etc?

Gift for my Girlfriend?

Hey everyone. With my little to nothing college student income, I’ve decided to start saving up for my girlfriend’s christmas present. The problem is, I don’t know what to get her. I know that she’s very interested in and very talented at photography, and was thinking about getting her some accessories or something for her camera. What are some good gifts that a photographer would love?

She is interested in starting to take more corporate pictures, for bands, weddings, businesses etc. I was thinking something along the lines of a really nice lens and a tripod, but don’t know if they would fit her camera, or even where to look. She currently owns a fujifilm finepix s series camera.

My ballpark budget is somewhere around $100-$300 dollars. I’m looking for ANY ideas, even if they aren’t photography related!

There are lots of photography related items in your budget range. Depending on what kind of lens your girlfriend has you could get her some close-up filters to help her with her macro shots. You could also get a star filter, which is a novelty lens that makes every single pinpoint of light look like five or six pointed star. This looks absolutely beautiful for Christmas tree lights and city nighttime shots.it also works great on shots with lots of candles.

Some close-up filters and a star filter should set you back no more than $100. Make sure the filters are the same diameter as her lens so she can easily screw them onto the front. Some of these filters come as a 58 mm diameter and some as the 77 mm diameter.

Should I get an MBA or an MFA in Photography?

I am faced with a dilemma and I am afraid that if I wait much longer, it’s going to be too late. I am currently 26 and I have been out of college for about 4 years now. Currently, I do something that I dont enjoy because it helps pay the bills. Its a typical corporate America job where I sit in a cubicle. I went to school for Radio/Tv stuff but after many internships after college, couldnt get a job in it. However, as a hobby of mine, I have really developed a niche for photography. I dont know much about it, but I know that I love it. In fact, I love digital media and anything video and film related. I have a little background in it since I have a degree in it.

If I am interested in starting my own photo business, should I get an MBA or MFA in Photography? I absolutely HATE business and know NOTHING about it. I have no business sense, but is it what I need to do to get going?

Do NOT do an MBA–you would be miserable. Get the MFA and be realistic that you will struggling for awhile. You can take small business courses locally through the Small Business Administration and other organizations. You will need to work in a gallery, museum or other org before you can get the reputation to have your own business. Also, start building your portfolio. One activity would be to do jobs for non-profits such as developing an interesting calendar. You will get good PR, and add to your portfolio. Good luck!

What are my chances of getting into Syracuse University for film/TV Production?

Hey, I’m currently a junior in high school and I’m wondering if i have what it takes to get into Syracuse University for film/TV production? Well my high school GPA right now is about a 3.47 and i take pretty all really hard classes. 1 AP right now, and I’m taking 2 next year when I’m a senior. For my ressumme I was part of my school’s musical my freshman and sophmore years. I also have been working/volunteering at my town’s TV station for a pretty long time now. I’m videographer with sporting events/local rock concerts (where i also control audio), I edit events for the station, I’m a production assisant with some of thier productions, and I’m also a news correspondant for my town’s weekly news. I also have been working at an arts camp (where i also attended as a little kid), at the camp I assissant in teaching 9-12 year olds the basics of film and TV pro and then we make short films of thier choice. I also edit all their videos for the camp. The guy who runs the camp is a Yale theater graduate student (he’s friends with Paul Giamatti and Ed Norton, haha good connections hopefully lol.) He like loves me (or atleast people tell me he does…) and I work with him with all the video classes. I also teach on Stop-motion animation and "Radio" class there. I also attended a summer camp for 2 summers (8th grade/9th grade summers) which is like considered a pretty prestigious camp where i took a TV pro class, a reading class, Improv class, and a current events class. I also just co-founded my high school’s TV Club a few months ago. I’m the co-officer of the club and I pretty much control the whole club (don’t wanna sound cocky but I am the most motivated with doing everything in the club.) In the club, I’m the producer of the club’s cable TV show, and also head writer/monologue writer, and co-editor. I’m also producing my own local cable TV comedy talk show this coming summer (I’m a HUGE Conan fan so i’m pretty pumped for it.) I’ve also been hired to make 2 corporate videos before for online newsletters. One was for the NHL Winter Classic in Boston and i just did one for the Boston Marathon. I’ve also been a team leader, director, producer, writer, and editor for 2 films before in the 48 Hour Film Project. (one in Providence, and one in Boston.) I’m doing another Providence one this summer. My other hobbies consist of making short films, photography, play bass in band (mostly just for fun), and writing (i do write mostly comedic stuff, like SNL skits and monologue jokes, this is probably my favorite hobby.)
I also have a few other small things to add to my resume by they’re pretty mini.

…But despite even if my ressume may be pretty decent, there is still one problem, i completely BOMBED my SATs, like horribly, i got a 1470 (combined all 3 sections). I know pretty bad. But the odd thing about my scores is that they made no sense what so ever to who I am as a person. I scored highest on math even thou math has ALWAYS been my weakest subject, and i score lowest on the writing section, (which makes no sense at all because i love writing and I’ve always been considered a pretty good by the people i know. i scored high on the writing essay part but then reallllyyyy low on the writing multiple choice.) But idk, i may just not be a good test taker, But do you people still think i may have a chance with getting into Syracuse University?

If you’re lucky, you won’t be admitted, so your parents won’t have to pay for a worthless Film/TV degree that will leave you unemployed after graduation.

I job has become a negative environment,that I cried on my way into work, and I don’t know what to do?

I don’t know what to do… I started working for this company a year ago. Through a temp agency, as a temp to perm position. I was hired on at x amount, for three days a week, and the promise of full time hours, benefits, permanent status, and a certain amount of pay. (more than the starting pay). I was told after the 1st of the year I would be hired on as a permanent employee. I’ve received positive feedback about my work performance. I just finished a big project designing a catalog for them. There are mistakes that are made, but without the proper equipment, support and with unrealistic deadlines, I think I’m doing well. I’m going to collect all the positive feedback I’ve received from the sales reps from emails to use for my portfolio. I’ve been able to create an online intranet for the national team of sales reps, FOR FREE! so that we can communicate, keep all up to date documents there..stuff. I headed the project of finding a professional photographer for the catalog. I was able to come in under half of the budget for photography. The images are wonderful. They haven’t updated their photography in twenty years. Before we hired the photographer, I was taking product photography, (and I still do for some a product here or there) I brought in my OWN equipment, and took some pretty decent shots. The ones in a product launch brochure I took 80% of the images, and it looked good. 100% better than what they had going on. They liked in then, but when it came time to discuss the catalog, suddenly my work was horrible, no good, etc. Anyways.. I worked hard, and many people think it’s the best catalog in 20 years… but there is no recognition, Just more complaints. Then there is my boss. He has a job he doesn’t want, and is not qualified to be in. He was a salesmen, and he even admitted to me he wishes he wasn’t the director of sales. He’s unorganized, hostile aggressive, quick to push blame. He tells me to do something, then changes his mind, forgets he changes his mind. All the other employees complain about the same thing. One employees keeps a folder of all the stupid emails that come from him. He’s very confusing. He bitched me out for twenty minutes and even said what is the point of having me here, when he asked why I didn’t do something. well because when I asked him to verify the information was correct, (via email) he responded he already took care of it. Okay so I didn’t do it. THEN the next day he asked me if I did it, I said no you told me not to. Then he starts jumping up and down that I didn’t do it. I looked at the email while he was bitching at me, it was then I realized that in his email he was being sarcastic, hostile, rude and unclear. He was giving me attitude about asking him to verify the information, after he just told me to verify the information with him. Then I got the corporate on my back. I was working late, and I would come in a few minutes late. because I was told "Hey as long as your work your 8 hours that’s fine"
then someone complained that I was here by myself without my direct supervisor,( I was here with a supervisor who didn’t mind) so then I got my hours restricted to exactly 8-5pm, at 5pm I must quickly exit the building PROMPTLY. I was told any overtime or different hours must be pre approved. Well when Good Friday rolled around, it was a holiday, and since I’m STILL a temp, I don’t get paid for Holidays. I asked if I could work some extra hours during the week, to make up for the lost hours. It was denied. I could only work during the 8-5, and a lunch from 12-1. After I was just told, I could work different hours, as long as it was pre-approved.There are several other examples I’m a single mom. I’m working at the same pay as I stared a year ago. I need a vacation, just a couple of days off.I need health care, sicks days,,, the pay that I was supposed to be getting, that they promised. When ask about this, they said oh well the new company that bought us out, is not hiring right now… But shouldn’t they honor the previous agreements? Then they tell me it’s not a full time position. Okay well why have I been working overtime for two months for the catalog?
I’ve offered to just freelance for them. Okay then let me work from home. I can come in two day a week or as needed. I have a smart phone with internet and email, I have BETTER equipment at home, with more up to date software. I can also access the central server from home as well. I am told that’s not how we do things around here. They are showing me that they do not care about me, my future, my familly how this affects me. I see no future with this company. When I ask about when WILL I be hired, I’m told nothing. If I don’t like it I can leave any find another job (which I am)
I feel that I was lied to, betrayed, mislead. Like I wasted a year of my life with this company. I don’t know ho

What kind of company will we be? A multimedia or production company? Both?

My business partner and I are looking to start a company that shoots weddings (film/stills) , corporate events, birthdays, etc. We will edit the video and photography and give our clients some type of package for their event. We are also professional musicians and want to offer our clients original scores, and get into maybe doing commercial jingles and shoot commercials. What do we call what we’re looking to do? Are we a production company? A mulitmedia company?

I know this is a lot to ask but how would you suggest we set our company up? I graciously thank you for your time and expertise!

A production company sounds too narrow but in reality it’s not. A multimedia company sounds more versatile and ready to do a wider variety of projects. While the difference is just semantics you should call your company by the name that will leave a feeling of more options for the potential customer. So I’d go for multimedia company.

A. Product C. Corporate
B. Editorial D. Photojournalism

If I am as you say, I would be a product photographer.

I could be a corporate staff photographer, so then my job could fall under A and C. If the shot was later released in a corporate news release, it could be picked up by a magazine and used in an editorial piece they wrote based upon the release and further research, but used the photo to illustrate the article.

The only thing that photo could NOT be, would be to be classified as Photojournalism.

I photographer the staff of ETHOS at a recent seminar. I only had a small window to capture everyone prior to the speakers.I set up a white seamless backdrop and marched these health industry workers in front of my lens..Corny jokes got the smiles.
