Well I am 20 years old. I have always loved photography and have taken lots of pictures of my sisters two daughters over the last two years since they were born and I am really interested in infant photography. My family tells me I should do it but I wanted to take a few more classes first so I can completely know what I’m doing. I was just wondering for anyone else who does this, what other thing’s you do? Do you also do child and family portraits or what else can or should I include?

It all depends on your area, and how much existing infrastructure you have. If you’ve already got the lighting and backdrop equipment (and, of course, a camera), you can go from there. In my experience, for traditional commercial (non-art, as in stuff you won’t be selling in a gallery) photography (building into a specific niche such as model, fashion, or family/children/senior portraiture) starts out doing pretty much everything you can get your hands on, most commonly family portraiture, children, etc, in a very broad, traditional sense. After building your finances and contacts up in your area, you’ll find it easier to branch out more.

If you’re in a small area, start out doing literally everything you can. Local band wants some pictures taken? Charge a small hourly fee (or a flat fee if the word "hourly" scares them – but make sure you get SOMETHING up front for bands). Shoot lots of your friends if you’re interested in portraiture, just to build a portfolio (don’t charge them ). Get listed in local directories (Yellow pages, newspapers, etc). Be sure to advertise senior portraiture, as that’ll always be a big deal (and can be milked if you’re low on cash). Afterwards you can take on more interesting contract gigs.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/molliesphotos I use a Canon Powershot A470 for digital photography and a Minolta 7000 for film photography. My family says I am a good photographer, but I want other opinions. I edit most of my photos. I am 12 years old. Is my photography good? If not, what are some tips? (This is only the best of my photography)

Hi, Mollie.
Welcome to the wonderful hobby of photography. You have some cute snaps, and I am sure you enjoy making and sharing them with your friends and family, and that is good. You will enjoy looking back on them in the future as well.

Part of the problem in asking for critique here on Y!A (or many places on-line) is the quality and knowledge base of the respondents. You don’t know who is replying, or how much they may actually know about the craft in question. You have heard from the gushers. They obviously like your work, and that is fine. I enjoyed it as well. Although the gushers have proclaimed how amazing and professional it all looks, remember that they are probably teens, understanding neither the basics of the craft, nor the art of critique. I am not in charge of a "photography agency", but I have been at it a while and have been on both ends of reasonable critique. Your work is what it is: Beginning photos from a young beginner in the hobby. They are pleasant, rather typical of newbie efforts, with common subjects and common exposure and compositional errors often made by beginners. Your camera is over-exposing sometimes, leaving highlights with no detail, or "blown". The giraffe and mushroom both have some major blown areas. I liked the mushroom shot, except for the over-exposure. The flowers are mundane snapshots, not the best lighting or viewpoint, and they are dead center in the frame. The rose and yellow flower are not too sharp, and the butterfly is almost lost in the composition. Most teen beginners take pictures of flowers, drawings, scraps of paper, and tennis shoes. Yours are in focus. I also see you are learning some manipulation techniques, such as selective color. These are good skills to practice, although selective color is dated and cliche, I still do a few from time to time myself. Brides in this area still like it. Do remember that excessive post processing will not save a mediocre shot and make it amazing. Often less is more.

Here are a couple of links for beginning to learn some basics:

http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml?pq-path=38/13915&pq-locale=en_US

http://asp.photo.free.fr/Composition/photoProgramCompMainClass.shtml

Taking a class is always a good idea, or join a local camera or photography club. Most advanced hobbyists are happy to mentor a newcomer. There you will get real and meaningful feedback to help you grow. Visit the local library for a book on the basics. Begin learning about exposure and composition. Look at good images in books and magazines. Read some photography magazines, like Popular Photography, Outdoor Photographer, and browse through National Geographic. Pick up some old Look magazines to see some classic B&W work. Even if your digital camera is not adjustable, (I believe your film Minolta is a manual camera) learning some basics will help you improve. Continue to practice and have fun. Enjoy the hobby as you learn. Continue to share your progress with us, Best wishes in the future and happy shooting.

My family is having a family reunion and I am taking some group shots for them. I decided I want to rent a wide angle lens. I have a Nikon D200 camera. I have a 24mm lens but I am not sure if that is going to be wide enough. I feel that a 10.5mm would be fun but I think that is going to be too wide. I am not sure what the largest group will be, maybe 20 people. Do you have any suggestions?

I think you’ll actually make out quite well with the 24mm. I’ve posted a few group photos and you can take a look and see what group or pose matches what you anticipate. Look under each photo where I’ve posted the technical data and you can see what camera and focal length I used. You’ll see that they are all done with a D200 or D300 and many are done with a 24mm setting or pretty close to 24mm. Unless you are confined to a small room where you can not back up if necessary, I’m sure your 24mm will work out fine. Take your 18-55 (or 17-55 – whatever) and you will be covered.

Since you’ve got " a lot of props" maybe you need to expand beyond family and friends. Based on that, there are a couple of ways, one inexpensive, the other not. First, convert your garage into a studio. Second, and this is really where going beyond friends and family comes in, build a studio. It can be a fairly simple shed, or even a pre-fabricated shed/building from a home repair type store. Other than these, I really don’t have any idea. Good luck.
