To be honest, I like a lot of these photos. The fact you took the time to do some shots that aren’t simply just "look into the camera and smile!" shots is very telling about your future success in photography

That being said, every photographer I have ever met wants to hear some healthy criticism of their work. A few shots were simply Blaise for the interesting layout you have on your page. When you showcase your photography you want to show the best of your shots, not hundreds of shots with a couple good ones thrown in.

I think your site would be much improved and everyone would be even more impressed if you trimmed a third of the photos off the site and kept with your interesting, non-staged and "oh man, this happened and I managed to get a perfect picture of it!" picture. Those shots are where your work really shines, baseball pictures and a couple unsmiling mugshots could be taken off and no one would know the difference!

Hi, I am a amateur photographer. A couple months ago I bought a Nikon D3000. The camera came with a 18/55 mm lens. I have been asked to do portrait photography for : senior pictures, family photos, single head shots and such. And i was wondering what would be the best lens for portrait photography? And macro too. Price is in mind but i do want to hear the cheaper lens’s and maybe the ones that I would want to splurge more on. Thank you so much!!! Oh and i usually shoot outside with natural lighting from the sun!
THank you so much!

The Micro-Nikkor AF-S 60mm f/2.8 would probably be a good choice. It’s a good focal length for portraits, with wider aperture and a little better image quality than using the 55mm end of your kit lens (although the 18-55mm is pretty good at 55mm). It is a macro lens, so it accomplishes both things on the top of your list. It will autofocus with your D3000.
It does not have VR, and for best results you should use a tripod.

My father is asking me to do portraits of the family, and I need help finding what type of lighting equipment I need for this task. Soft boxes, umbrellas, etc.? Which would be best in my case, but not too expensive?

If you are not experienced in using artificial light for shooting portraits, you will want to start out using incandescent lamps so you can "see" how you are lighting them.

The best for the price may be this "kit" http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/285789-REG/Lowel_GO_95LBZ_TO_GO_95_Kit.html

You will also need a background stand like this one. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/395974-REG/Savage_6203750_Background_Port_A_Stand_Travel_Case_.html

I have to agree with Ian on this one… If you are looking to expand your portfolio then look at it as a short term investment on your part. It will pay itself shortly once you expose your work on your portfolio. However, if you are doing it only because you don’t want to turn it down and feel like you could charge a reasonable price then go for it… specially if your drive could involve some nice scenes to shoot along the way.
I would charge regular price then half of fuel cost.

My younger brother is making his confirmation in May and we’re are getting our last ever family portrait together. I want to look nice in the photos. Which colours look the best in a photographers photos with a white background. Also I’m 18 5′2" and a size 8 (size 2 US), any suggestions of what outfits would suit me and look nice for the occasion?
Thanks

Exact colors are not important. Don’t wear white clothes or white shoes. If you had a white shirt under a sweater or layered tank tops, as long as its not the top layer, you can do that. Don’t wear white on a white backdrop. Wear clothes that fit, flatter your shape, and don’t stand out. You don’t want people to notice you right away because you’re mostly naked or wearing something with the "F" word printed on it very large. You want to kind of coordinate with the rest of the family at least somewhat. You don’t need matching outfits, or anything silly like that. You should pick out your colors based on your skin tone. You don’t want your skin to look yellow or green or worse yet, orange. Browns are nice and neutral and depending on your skin tone, you can wear darker ones or lighter ones. Minimal to no patterns as well and no neon colors. I’d go for a simple kind of timeless look, don’t date yourself by wearing Hollister or Aeropostale or whatever is popular where you are. Good Luck.

I’m thinking about going to Academy of Art University in San Francisco, CA. I want to become a professional photographer. I want to do senior portraits, weddings, family portraits, etc…I’m thinking about getting an Associates of Arts degree, then becoming someone’s assistant or getting an internship after i graduate….is this a good plan or should i get a Bachelors Degree?

I did freelance in Boston for 16 yrs. Experience and an eye out-weigh a degree but a BA is always good to have. Ask yourself if you’re doing this because it’s cool or because you feel driven. And then realize that you will always be at the mercy of art directors, brand new mothers-in-law and your corporate masters. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great. But after a few years, it becomes a job like any other.Today I have a day job that I enjoy and I shoot and sell the images that I want and that drove me to be a photographer in the first place. I’m much happier.
A plumber’s house has leaky pipes. My point is I stopped doing what I loved in order to make a living at it. Now I get to make a living AND do what I love. But I’m just a jaded old punk. Go for the BA, educate yourself and do something that makes you afraid, every day.
