Hi everyone,

So, I am very interested in buying a Professional Camera for Fashion Photography.I am very passionate about this, so I really want to get a good one.

Any suggestions? Thank you so much in advance.

The camera that suits you may not suit others, so look at the recommendations you have been given then try them out – the professional-level cameras can all be hired at reasonable costs (check the internet/phone directories in your area.

There are very few cameras used by professional fashion photographers. The most common are Canon 5d MkII and given that this is (compared to many full frame DSLRs) a relatively inexpensive camera, it is easy to recommend it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Nikon D3 series cameras, either, but if you are really interested in professional fashion, remember that the top agencies will not accept photos shot with most cameras – you need a full frame Nikon or Canon camera…the only current exceptions are Canon 50D 7D and Nikon D300 (check out Getty’s minimum requirements).

That is not to say you couldn’t begin with something simpler and less expensive, But if you are good enough to do this professionally, a full frame Canon or Nikon is what you should be looking at. I have to say, though, that the fact that you are using Answers for this sort of information rather than a dedicated photography site makes me doubt that you are anything like ready.

Lighting on the catwalk or the red-carpet is usually on-camera flash with a light modifer – think SB900 for a Nikon system or 580 EX II for Canon – either one is about the same price as an entry level SLR.

For all other fashion work, you will need to master lighting – outdoors with diffusers, reflectors and sometimes, portable strobe lighting. Similar gear is required for indoors location shoots (of which you will do a lot) and in the studio you will have to come to terms with reflectors, strobes, gobbos, barn doors, softboxes, ring flash, backgrounds, green screens, flash meters etc.

Passion is going to be your greatest asset – but there is a lot to learn, and to get into fashion full time you will be well served by finding a working pro who is willing to take you on as an assistant (the best assistants are in demand and well paid, but don’y expect that – you will be working for experience, contacts and networking, Not money). Good luck.

I won’t to learn more about the fashion side of things, as I spent the last year studying and experimenting with photography I think its time to look at the fashion side of things, what do I need to know? poses, clothes etc….
and where can I find this information? Should I be looking at fashion TV, be reading vogue and shooting models? or is that not necessary

Deep Blue2 is correct.

It is important that you spend a lot of time studying how photographers light their subjects, fashion or otherwise.

Fashion photography is a little more complex since you will be spending a lot of time working with MUA’s, hair stylists, wardrobe and art directors, so it is more of a team effort. As you can guess, lighting it the most important aspect other than you being able to compose and produce perfectly exposed images on demand. In addition, you will have to be comfortable directing the models into the poses that are called for in the shot list presented to you at the beginning of each shoot

Sample

http://s862.photobucket.com/albums/ab182/fotomanaz/Answers%20album/?action=view&current=idrs_8282-davantiEdit1.jpg&newest=1

Spend a lot of time in bookstores, drinking coffee and studying all the fashion magazines each month. Take copious notes on the models looks, poses and lighting.

I’m only fourteen but I’ve started to REALLY get into fashion and photography. I guess I don’t dress like everyone else, whether that’s unique or not I don’t know.

I’ve seen sites like Lookbook which are really good. How can I get clothes which are fashionable, good quality but not very expensive?

I really don’t know where to start! Any help?

First you should finish school. Don’t drop out of your education because you think you can live off your fashion skills. A good education can lead to a good collage and therefore a good fashion career.

Second, don’t set your mind completely on fashion. Your only fourteen which means you might just be going through a phase and you have a lot of potential left in your youth. Don’t focus on one thing and loose sight of everything else, keep an open mind.

All in all, finish school and learn what life has to teach you at your age. Then, when you reach the age when your looking for a collage to go into, think about what you want as a career and if its still fashion, go for it!

Kodak Easyshare Z1285 12-Megapixel Digital Camera – Black

• 12.0 megapixels
• 5x optical zoom
• 2.5 LCD screen
• Digital image stabilizer
• HD pictures and video
• 64MB internal memory

if not, are there any products or assceories to help my photography with this Camera?

It depends on what you mean by "good." No professional is going to be using anything but an SLR. I’m sure there are plenty of professional fashion photographers who would tell you that you shouldn’t be using anything less than a medium format film or digital camera, like the Hasselblad H3DII-50.

http://www.hasselbladusa.com/products/h-system/h3dii-50.aspxa

They’d probably tell you that if you don’t have many thousands of dollars to spend on gear, to skip digital and get an old Hasselblad or Mamiya 6×6 Film Camera and learn what you’re doing on it.

That said, a lot of professionals use 35mm or small format DSLR’s, and if you’re not trying to be a professional, but just learn your way around, you can probably learn a lot and take some good pictures with the Kodak. Even among point-and-shoots, you’d be significantly better off with something more aimed at enthusiasts like a Canon Powershot G series, as mentioned above. Here’s a list of other good choices:

http://www.imaging-resource.com/WB/WB.HTM?view=dp_enth

What you’re missing on the Kodak Z1285 that’s available on other point-and-clicks are Aperture and Shutter priority modes and a Hot Shoe. Also, you can get some with larger sensors and higher quality lenses.

The Kodak’s not too bad though, it has some of the important features you need, like low lag time a decent frame rate, manual shooting mode, and a reasonably bright aperture (f2.8) when zoomed out to the not-so-wide 35mm. There are some unknowns here that are important for fashion, like how fast the auto-focus is, particularly in low, light, and whether or not it has an infrared auto-focus assist. You don’t want to use strobe auto-focus assist or red-eye reduction for fashion.

As far as flashes, you can get by without the hot shoe (or wireless flash controllers) by using slave flashes, as long as you aren’t shooting in an environment with a bunch of other photographers concurrently. Pick up 2-5 slaves flashes:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=slave+flash&x=0&y=0

and get (or make) some cheap flash trees. The Kodak camera and a few slave flashes (and some decent shooting environment and models) would be enough for you to start learning a lot about fashion photography and get some decent pictures. You aren’t going to be hired to do coverage of runway shows for some magazine with that gear, but it’s a start.

I’m in 11 grade, and this summer I wanted to do a little outdoor Fashion photography( mostly on the beach), but I was wonder what equipment I should get( I was doing a lot of reading and I was thinking about geting stobes and reflectors) also I was thinking about getting the nikon d80 with a 70mm lenses. Do you think that is a good camera and lenses?

Can you guys help me on the equipment I should get for outdoor Fashion Photography

In terms of outdoor lighting if you are going to use strobes then you will need to either have a portable battery pack or a gas generator both of which are really going to set you back a lot of money, at least a lot more than the camera and lens. Additionally strobe equiptment can be quite heavy because in addition to the strobe pack and heads you will also have to carry around tripods, sandbags(needed to weigh down the tripods so as to prevent the lights from falling over in the wind) as well as other light modifiers and such.
If you want a cheap, portable and a relatively powerful lighting setup for its size I would suggest a Quantum Q flash. It is portable, easy to use, and has a variety of light modifiers such as umbrellas and softboxes which you can use. The best part is that it is cheap, and should cost no more than $1200 for everything you will need http://www.qtm.com/QFlash/
Now if you want something more powerful, are still on a budget and dont mind carrying around a heavy battery pack then check out alien bees. I would suggest one of their 800w/s strobes with a battery pack which again will cost you around $1000 with all the extra lighting modifiers and such.
So in terms of cameras, I would suggest you take a look at a D200 which is more professional and rugged than the d80. Since the D300 came out you can get this older model for a good price. Better yet you can get a used one at KEH.com and use that extra money you saved on more lighting equipment. As for lenses you may be strapped for cash so I suggest something like a Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8
