Get an associates in business at community college. You can probably pick up basic photography there as your electives. Then go for your bachelor degree. The business knowledge will increase your income substantially.

I’m going into college soon and I need a dslr for my photography major. I will be using the camera for fine art photography, nature, and fashion photography. Also I have a budget up to $700 and i’m open to nikon, sony, pentax…

Having a flexible kit including lenses important when your focus is on creativity and learning. So it’s worth buying older models of things and off-brand stuff. The quality you lose is out-weighed by the flexibility you gain, and your creativity and personality will have a chance to take the stage.

See if you can get a fairly comprehensive and flexible kit like the following:

Pentax K100D Super
Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 Macro DC for Pentax
Pentax 50mm A/1.7
Sigma 50-200mm DC for Pentax

You may also want to consider an external flash instead of the last two lenses.

Go to www.pentaxforums.com and check out the Marketplace. You might be able to pickup a complete kit all in one go. You might also find some good deals at www.keh.com.

Question for Photography assignement – folk or fine art?

The question is: "Why can photography be called a ‘folk art’ as opposed to a ‘fine art’ "?
I’m a little confused because folk art is art iconic to an indigenous culture but photography is part of the entire Western world.
I think there are arguements for both but the question is asking for the arguement for ‘folk’.

Photography can be both and more. I think people may view it as more democratic and a ‘friendlier’ art then lets say painting or sculpture, which have become more and more academic. This has become more true since the advent of the smaller format cameras, Instamatic-cameras, brownies, range finders, point and shots, etc. Credit has often been given to W. Eugene Smith, not for this particular trend, but for making smaller formats more palatable by forcing Life Magazine to ‘allow’ him to use a 35mm slr camera back in the day. Up until that time professionals only used Large format equipment. I think this has something to do with it. Lay people would see professionals using smaller and less expensive equipment and be moved to photograph a lot more.
Other art forms also feel more intimidating then photography to most people. I think it’s a question of accessibility. As equipment got smaller, easier to use and more affordable people could quite easily pick up a camera and start to document. Think about it would be more likely to paint a portrait of someone or take their photo? What is easier to carry?

Where should i study photography as an art in the UK?

I’m going to be a senior in high school and have been wanting to do photography since 8th grade. Currently, I’m one of the best in my school and will without a doubt go on to study it in college. I love doing portraits and my dream would be to go into fashion photography and do the crazy advertisments for brands like Louis Vuitton & Chanel that you see in Vogue… Where would be the best school(s) to go to to study fashion photography?

Also, considering what i like to do which branch of photography should i go into because there are a few:

Digital Photography
Advertising Photography
Photographic Art
