depends on your experience… check things like the trade magazines, newspapers… check with the BBC, ITV, etc…

Good idea? Good money? I’m majoring in Biology. USCL for 2 years, then transferring to USC Columbia.

Joining the outdoors club in both colleges,and I’m sure biology courses will take me to some locations.

Good idea, very good idea. Since you will be learning all of the taxological names for the animals, you will be ahead. You will know specific issues for each species you encounter. Also biology projects (counting the endangered fish in a local river for example) will give you customized stories. Learn to photograph the people as well as the animals, and you’ve got a cover on National Geo. Seriously, if I was young I would have majored in archaeology and used my film/photo interests to conduct and document my research. I think I’d have a lot more images in publication. The academic background will help you be taken more seriously in the better publications. Advanced photography skills will ensure that your projects are printed, and if the project is interesting enough maybe even funded by a magazine or a grant agency like the National Science Foundation or the like.

Money is not so good in photography. A tenured professor does better, and since a professor must publish or perish, you have it all built in. Go for it.

I’ve taken my love of life and photography to a next level ….. I’ve taken pics of friends as long as I can remember but now someone wants to pay me to do it !! but I don’t think my lil digital camera can do the job ….. any suggestions on a good camera ! ??? …..

There are a dozen good, professional-level brands of equipment out there, and they’re all good. I mean Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax, Sony and others. So it’s not a matter of finding a camera, but of a person who can advise you — in person — about equipment and techniques as well as business. If you live in a city, there may be camera clubs out there that have knowledgeable people in them. Or you might try assisting a commercial photographer who does weddings, etc. In any case, remember that equipment doesn’t make the pictures, except in a technical sense — the photographer does, so make education part of your budget.

hi, i do photography as a hobby and occasionallydo wedding pictures (which i make some money).. well, recently my bank decided that they wont cash checks written out to "name name photography" unless i open a business account. but im not a photography business and i have no business license or anything so i wouldnt even be able to open a business account. why are they deciding its a business and how can i prove that its not?

If you have not set up a business then the checks should be made out to you personally. Either have the checks made to you personally or register with the IRS for an EIN with the business name (doesn’t cost anything). Your local government may also require a business license and there will be a fee for that. Since it’s just a hobby, your best bet is just to have checks made out to you.
