Looking for a name for my new photography business,any ideas?

Most of my work will be done on location, outdoors. There will be very little studio work. Will be photographing families, newborns, senior portraits, maternity, etc. Pretty much everything but weddings. Open to any suggestions. Thanks in advance!!

I need some serious professional advice in my studio photography career?

Since my beautiful baby girl has been born, I haven’t found a job that can actually support me working AND paying for a babysitter.
I’ve had several years of studio photography experience, and that is primarily what I’ve done for the last several years. I have a few Paul C. Buff Alien Bees lights that do the trick for most lighting situations, although… I wish I could afford better equipment.
My husband got out of the military last July, and since then, I’ve done a few freelance photography jobs on my own. Mainly family and maternity/newborn studio.
My main problem is that I’m not a salesperson, and that I SUCK at marketing myself. We moved to a new state. I had 5 or so family shoots around Christmas time that made some money, but since then have been unable to pick up shoots off of craigslist alone.
I had a job offer the other day to be an apprentice to a studio that is in a (somewhat) nearby mall. I know that I can take better photos than those that are on this private mall studios website. Should I go with it, in the interest of keeping in practice, or do you think that I MIGHT have what it takes to make it on my own?

I SUCK as a salesperson.
When I shoot on my own, I generally sell the whole session on disc for $100.
I really thought I’d get better responses, but then… I just post on craistlist and don’t really know anyone around here in order to spread by word of mouth.

In your opinion, am I better off bettering my marketing/salesmanship skills and shooting on my own, or should I join as an apprentice to an already established studio?
FTR… I just had a beautiful baby girl. I’d like to be at home with her as much as possible. If you think I could find a 40 hour per week job that could pay for her care AND make some extra money, I’d do it. In fact, I have an interview soon with a company that has a place in a mall. I know that my photography is better than the photos that they showcase on their walls, so I’m slightly hesitant to even go to the interview.
What do you think? Should I stick it out on my own? Advertise more, in different places other than just craigslist?! Or just give it up and go to the interview?

Forget the mall studio, those jobs are all about selling.
Look for a business incubator or an artists coop in your city. Start networking with other moms. Where I live there are local websites and chat rooms for moms. Get involved in the community and it will lead to work.
Check with area studios about assisting part-time. Most photographers can always use help on a location shoot.
Take everything you can get to build a businees of your own, you have the skill.
And, your website is fine. Having a domain name is professional.

The business is for photography of all types, weddings, maternity, newborn, kids, family, and invitations for weddings birthdays, save the date magnets, birth or graduation announcements, birthday parties. We cant think of anything that relates to both…any ideas?

Maternity Photography with VERY special circumstances?

I was contacted by a lady to take some photos for her daughter who is pregnant, but they know she is going to lose the baby, most likely it’ll be a still born. Anyway, they want photos that’ll honor the little baby and now I’m on a mission to really get amazing ideas so they love the photos!
This couple is also super religious and won’t show skin or anything and always wears skirts so we have to be careful there…. But basically I’m just trying to get some ideas togehter so I can really wow them, as well as help honor the little guy
any ideas appreciated!!

Try getting low down on some views (not low enough to be under the skirt!) and get a view with her belly in the foreground and her face in the background so that it’s just a little blurry. It gives it a dreamy feel and keeps the baby the subject.

What should I charge for my photography business?

I am an amateur photographer and have just started my own photography business. I am trying to figure out how much I should charge for my sessions and what should be included. Any advice would be very helpful. Should I give the client a cd with their photos as well, or just have them order prints though me?

The session I need pricing advice for are portraits, small events, engagement, maternity, and small weddings. Thanks!
Fishmeister – yes, I have started a photography business, but it is not up and running yet. I am currently in the process of getting a website set up and figuring out my prices. I have taken many photos for friends and family, and yes, they like my work. It would have been nice for some real advice or encouraging words instead of tearing down a fellow photographer. Don’t judge before you know all the facts next time.

It depends. Mostly on the quality of service you’re offering and what you’re offering to the clients.

Offering CDs with all the images on is becoming increasingly common, but that doesn’t mean you have to. It can obviously hurt repeat business. Perhaps offer a "social networking" package, which would include images at a reduced resolution that can be uploaded, but would be harder to produce good quality prints. Make sure this is explained to people buying the package.

I would think about $50-$150/hour for location work and maybe slightly less for studio work, depending on what the quality of the studio is. Many people will see this as overcharging, but these people are people who will never be happy with the service you provide.

Charge for prints on top of the hourly rate, though you might want to include a minimum number of prints to begin with. For example, the first 3 prints at 6"x4" are free, but there is a charge for a larger print or for more prints.

Always be conservative with the number of usable photos you’re offering from a photoshoot. 30 from an all day event gives you the opportunity to select only the very best and not the ones that anyone could’ve taken. This helps to differentiate you from other photographers too. Explain your reasoning for this and add that they may be lucky and get more pictures than they expected.

Aim to be providing a high-quality professional service and price yourself accordingly, and you’ll get repeat business. Remember you’ve got to make enough to make equipment investments and the time you’re spending worthwhile.

Softbox lighting vs. umbrella lighting???

I am fairly new to photography but have had several people look at my work and ask me to take their senior pics, maternity pics, etc. I will gladly take pics for people if we are outside and they turn out great. However, when it comes to indoor/studio pics I turn them down because I don’t feel like I have the appropriate lighting/equipment necessary.
I would like to purchase some studio equipment but need HELP! I don’t need to know the cheapest stuff out there, as this equipment will hopefully be used for many years and help my hobby-to-business grow! I need to know WHAT to buy as far as lighting, and anything else that you would recommend, (I don’t even know the difference!). If I’m going to do this, I want to do it "right" straight from the beginning! Brands, websites, etc would be a big a big plus in heading me in the right direction! Thank you!!!

What Photography subject or topic have become "photography Cliche" but you still get a kick out of seeing?
