After that its a question of resolution.

Unless you are printing A2 and higher, or need big files for agency work, then the 12MP D3 is loads and loads. If you need the 24MP resolution (and very few do, very few in fact need 12MP) then it’s a no-brainer.

The price difference is huge so you would really really need to want 24MP.

If you can live with "only" 12 then you could save even more cash by looking at the D700. The difference in price between the D3 and D700 would get you a very nice landscape lens. The difference in price bwtween the D3 and D3x would fly you somewhere very exotic to get some nice shots.

If you really need 24MP there is a third way, assuming you haven’t yet bought into a system, the Sony a850 or a900.

For landscape and urban photography the best time is 30 minutes before sunrise, and 30 minutes past sunset, the landscape basks in soft colorful light which is extremely propitious to photography.

The best time to photograph flowers is right after a rainstorm while the sun is still hidden behind the clouds. The lighting and the rain drops on the flowers looks just amazing.

Portrait photography will require soft side lighting that could be accomplished with natural or studio lighting.

Sport photography is an even that you can not wait for the correct natural lighting.

The key to landscape photography is to find a scene that has 3 components. A strong foreground or near object, an interesting middle ground object and an interesting distant object.

Now typically, for landscapes to come alive, you need to shoot with a wide angle lens, with the foreground object right at your feet basically

Then you need to shoot with a small aperture, like f11, or f16 to make sure that everything in your scene is in clear focus, and has a good depth to it.
