I have done photography in a professional studio for a few years now. I am wanting to start doing some work on the side now out of my garage, not to mention doing pics of my own family. I am using an Olympus E-1 and a Konica Minolta 5D. I have been doing photography outdoors of my kids, but since we are converting our garage to a studio, I need info on indoor lighting. I am on a fixed budget however. Any suggestions?

I use slave strobes from Ritz. These little guys put out lots of light in a very small package. The use AAA batteries so they’re easy to load before a shoot and take out after.

For studio work you may want to consider mounting them to back flash into an umbrella for smoother light. The only problem is they use light as a trigger so you’ll have to have a flash on your camera. That can be muted as well for smoother looks.

The think I love about them is they’re so protable and my setup, minus the tripods for them, fits in a very small bag.

Here’s an example of what I’ve done with mine. This was a very large scene but as you can see with my camera’s flash and my strobes it lit the entire thing. Just a thought. Oh, these little strobes are only about $35 each plus tripods at about $30 each from Wal Mart.

I’m on a very limited budget! The choices are overwhelming. I have decided on strobe lighting, but unsure of different power levels. I have a konica minolta z6 digital camera.

There are lots of places on the web you can try. For instance the people at photoflex.com have a free school section. They offer some cool things for free and you can also sign up at cost for additional lessons.

You can also try the folks at Digital Photography Review for help with specific answers or you can browse their forums (http://www.dpreview.com/forums/ ) for reading previous questions and answers.

Also pay a visit to your local bookstore like Barnes & Noble or Borders. Generally they can help you.

Also try meetup.com and join a photography group in your area and learn from peers.
Best of luck to you.

Because I want to try it out…

Sit about 3-5 feet from a North facing window. Put a large black cloth behind you, at least 5 feet from you, if you can.

Set your camera on a tripod, grab your ice cream lid, set your aperture to 5.6 or 8, set the focus, set timer, and BAM, self-portrait.

If you have to dark a shadow on the left side of your face, place a white sheet or reflector just out of frame on that side, face high. Shadow’s gone.

Basic – three lights, one fill, one key, one backilght – constants are good for this. Add 2 strobes and umbrellas also. Really depends on what you are shooting. The constants dont have to be expensive cheap 500w will do, get some blue gels and some diffusing cloth.
