air photos (vertical) are mosaic combined to make a kind of photo map. this used to be done by hand when i was in school, but now they have computers that do a better job of blending photos together and are more accurate for scale as well.

It’s natural light. Create the right setting. A barn, a horse, a girl and sunlight would be a good starting place.

I know there are better cameras but I wanted a pretty good camera for under $200. Like I said, I’m serious about it but more as a hobby than anything else.

Exposure is the big weakness in many photographers work and it’s inherent to getting great lighting effects (which can make a simple subject look stunning) and to controlling studio lighting.

Your camera meter ‘thinks’ in terms of mid tones / averages, so if you present it with a non-average subject (a white cat on a white bedspread, or a black cat on a black one) it’s going to fool the meter.

There are several ways around this:
1. Simply meter off a mid tone subject under similar lighting and then set your camera up in Manual using those settings.
2. Meter off a grey card instead, which will give you that mid tone average.
3. Use an ‘incident light meter’ to make those readings instead.
4. Check the histogram on the camera, understand how it relates to the scene, and make adjustments as necessary.

Finally it’s important to understand exposure latitudes – the range of light your equipment will record:
1. Transparency film is typically 4 stops.
2. Negative film is typically up to 4.5 stops – though some film, especially that which is B/W but C41 processed, can reach around 9 stops.
3. JPEG’s and TIFFs typically record 3.5 stops – which equates to the range of light o a printed page, AKA ‘the print window’.
4. RAW files can now be made with up to 11 stops of recording range.

These are fundamental building blocks of photography technique, and when I lecture to professionals I typically get 40-50% of the audience putting their hands up when I mention exposure latitudes or the print window – if you don’t know them or understand the implications you won’t be in control of what you take.

I think one goal of photography is to share a perspective. Some people are so busy in their own lives that they don’t take the time to see things for what they are. Sometimes only giving certain things a passing glance, or they view the subject through the periphery of their vision. A photographer can give these people a new perspective of something that they may have not thought of before. A cat hanging from a tree, showing people to hang on, cause it could be worse, a horse running over open country to signify freedom, an animal in a cage to show imprisonment. All photos are an expression of something, usually art photography is a medium by which an artist can use to explain or spot light something they feel of importance. If you ever have a chance, study a photo mosaic. See all the different pictures come together to make one larger picture. It may help you to get a better grasp and the word requirement. Just use a lot of details, and that should help you reach it.

Ps. I can’t travel much, nor can I afford an amazing camera, necessarily. I’m only fourteen.

Look at other people’s photography. Not just browse and say, "oh that’s nice" and move on. I mean really look at photos that are successful. See why they are. What draws you to them, or what part of them draws you to them. Its a great learning tool, maybe one of the best.

First, master the camera. Know what it can do well and can’t do well and work within those boundaries. When you have it pretty well figured out, you can step out of those sometimes and assess how its performing.

Don’t use the flash until you have a good handle on what you’re doing. If you’re taking family pics indoors, go ahead and use it. Family pics are great, don’t get me wrong, but its not exactly photography in the sense of the art.

Angles. Rule number one, don’t tilt the camera. This is not a camera angle, its called being misguided that its some kind of unique thing that EVERYONE who is not a photographer in the real world is doing. Camera angles are dependent on the perspective you’re trying to portray. Portraits have kind of their own rules apart from the other stuff.

Your pics need to be on point with each of these 3 things to be good. Composition, exposure and focus. Try not to post anything that’s not perfectly sharp or as close as you can get it. Focus is not all about holding the camera steady. Good Luck!
