Night Photography Tutorial

This video is a tutorial showing you how to gather the knowledge how to create great night photographs. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you own one or more of fast lenses, such as, Nikon 28mm ƒ/1.4D AF, 35mm ƒ/1.4 AIS, 50mm ƒ/1.2 AIS, 50mm ƒ/1.4D AF, 50mm ƒ/1.4G AF-S, 55mm ƒ/1.2 AIS, or 85mm ƒ/1.4D AF, these lenses are NOT recommended for night photography because of its superb performance at maximum apertures between F/1.2 to F/4 but the overall quality will worsen when stopped down farther than F/4 (F/5.6, F/8, F/11, etc.). Lenses with maximum apertures of F/1.8, F/2.0, or F/2.8 will do just fine at F/8. Enjoy!

‘Authority’ paranoia over photography in London

An interesting short film about the legality of taking photographs on the streets in the UK. There’s a nice interaction between the photographer and a couple of Police Community Support Officers in Central London.

For those who are unfimilar with CSO’s, these are not Police Officers, though they are uniformed personnel working with the police in England and Wales. Their function it seems is:

‘…to provide a visible and reassuring presence on the streets and tackling the menace of anti-social behaviour.’

You can draw your own conclusions on that!

NB The bit about having to ask for permission before taking photographs in Railway Stations is somewhat misleading as you don’t have to have prior permission – not at the moment anyway

Amazing tilt-shift photography video!

Tilt-shift miniature faking is a process in which a photograph of a life-size location or object is manipulated so that it looks like a photograph of a miniature scale model. By distorting the focus of the photo, the artist simulates the shallow depth of field normally encountered with macro lenses making the scene seem much smaller than it actually is. Many miniature faked photographs are taken from a high angle to further simulate the effect of looking down on a miniature. Objects oriented horizontally, such as the train in the first example, make better subjects for tilt-shift miniature faking than vertically oriented objects. Thes videos were created by Keith Loutit.
