Since most "books" are now placed on the Internet, the chances of one of your subjects seeing themselves in your portfolio have increased.

look for images you can shoot like the ones you see maybe you are local to a work wide event or tourist attraction and can shoot it in all weathers and seasons, you have access to a fresh food market, is some on you know a cook, hairdresser, policeman plumber or stay at home mum? ask friends or relatives that will model for you

news stories
anything collectable or old
anything you have an interest in (look in books and magazines to see what and how they shoot) contact the magazines and ask if they need images

I have talked to photographers that don’t want to sell through stock image agencies because they don’t want to give away half of the profit taken to the agency
The agency is just another tool. If you are marketing your images and selling threw an agency as well it is adding to your selling power. Stock images gives any image you take a secondary market. you could have a week with out work but still get a check from an agency from a photo you took 5 years ago on a cold rainy day in your kitchen on a day you did not have any work. so it is important to shoot, shoot, shoot.

Wildlife photography usually involves shooting animals from far away, thus photographer need a long focal lens so they can "pull" their subject closer without having to go close to the (dangerous/shy) animals themselves. You will see people refers to such lens as "exotic lens" since they are low in production, and cost a lot (may go up to $10,000 for one), and a focal length of 400mm/500mm/600mm. That said, there are things called a "tele-converter" which multiplies the focal length. For example, a 1.4x teleconverter would turn a 600mm lens into 840mm lens (and drop in speed, become darker by 1 stop).

Modeling shots is a bit more complicated. It depends all on the artist/photographer’s approach and it can be of any lens. The usual would be using a fast prime lens such as the 85mm f/1.4 for a shallow depth of field (sometime desirable in portrait shots, but depends a lot on genre). But I know pro photographers personally that uses a 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom for portrait and the result is stunning, so it’s all up to the photographer.

Macro lens is a bit special. Unlike a normal lens, they have the ability to focus really close. There will always be a limit on how close you can get to your subject when you focus, I suppose you know that too. But macro lens lets you go even closer (relatively, for example, 105mm macro lens will let you go closer to the subject than a 105mm normal lens), so the end result is that your subject would look a lot bigger. Macro lens for SLR cameras is not the same as those on compact cameras, it is not about being able to go as close as 1cm etc etc… it’s about magnification. You will still have to be like 2 feet away from your subject on a really long 200mm macro lens for example. (well, can’t remember the exact number, but you get my point, it’s not about being 2cm away from subject).

Your last statement is not entirely true. Lens technology has advances so much that cheap kit lens is as sharp and clear as most pro grade camera lens. It’s just that pro-grade camera lens usually is very "fast", with a large aperture to let more light going through the lens, and of course, built quality. Most pro lens are built like a tank and can take abuse (but please don’t do it…)

Sorry for the idiotic question, but I know little to nothing about it…

It’s not an idiotic question, in fact, I’ve been in that scenario.

I used to supplement my income with photography but there were some hard times I fell upon when I turned to my abilities to self-promote myself in such a way that with hard work, long hours and the personal motivation to push myself as an individual needing to survive with my talents for creative writing and photography, I managed to earn a living doing accidents, news and the occasional assignment from local media. I became what is called a ‘Professional’ because I was living primarily from my income as a photographer and doing odd jobs like mowing grass, some electrical work and home maintenance (jack of all trades kind of stuff) to get a few more dollars here and there outside of the photography.

Currently, I do have a primary income that I now supplement with my photography so the rolls have reversed. I will always be a photographer but not always be a Professional (until I retire and go full force into what I love to do).

Thanks for the question… you opened up an issue I always address with people.

A photographer sells images… everyone else just takes pictures.
A Professional photographer earns better than 50% of their annual income from photography work they do…

…it’s that simple.

You need to have business savy and a solid work ethic. Contact your Secretary of State and Small Business Association and ask them about starting a photography business. They should get you on the right track there.
