My family is having a family reunion and I am taking some group shots for them. I decided I want to rent a wide angle lens. I have a Nikon D200 camera. I have a 24mm lens but I am not sure if that is going to be wide enough. I feel that a 10.5mm would be fun but I think that is going to be too wide. I am not sure what the largest group will be, maybe 20 people. Do you have any suggestions?
I think you’ll actually make out quite well with the 24mm. I’ve posted a few group photos and you can take a look and see what group or pose matches what you anticipate. Look under each photo where I’ve posted the technical data and you can see what camera and focal length I used. You’ll see that they are all done with a D200 or D300 and many are done with a 24mm setting or pretty close to 24mm. Unless you are confined to a small room where you can not back up if necessary, I’m sure your 24mm will work out fine. Take your 18-55 (or 17-55 – whatever) and you will be covered.

I just shot a family reunion in Minnesota and I did not even have a wide angle lens-I shot with a 35mm and there were 40 people probably (?)–it worked out swell
Just had to back up a bit farther to get everyone in the shot
10.5 would be a fisheye-much too wide ;P it would be terrible for group portraits but fun for a photo or two

At 10.5 you’re looking for major distortion. I’ve done groups of over 100 and never used anything wider than an 18 and usually not that!

get a 11-18mm or 12-22mm or there abouts zoomer maybe
