My younger brother is making his confirmation in May and we’re are getting our last ever family portrait together. I want to look nice in the photos. Which colours look the best in a photographers photos with a white background. Also I’m 18 5′2" and a size 8 (size 2 US), any suggestions of what outfits would suit me and look nice for the occasion?
Thanks

Exact colors are not important. Don’t wear white clothes or white shoes. If you had a white shirt under a sweater or layered tank tops, as long as its not the top layer, you can do that. Don’t wear white on a white backdrop. Wear clothes that fit, flatter your shape, and don’t stand out. You don’t want people to notice you right away because you’re mostly naked or wearing something with the "F" word printed on it very large. You want to kind of coordinate with the rest of the family at least somewhat. You don’t need matching outfits, or anything silly like that. You should pick out your colors based on your skin tone. You don’t want your skin to look yellow or green or worse yet, orange. Browns are nice and neutral and depending on your skin tone, you can wear darker ones or lighter ones. Minimal to no patterns as well and no neon colors. I’d go for a simple kind of timeless look, don’t date yourself by wearing Hollister or Aeropostale or whatever is popular where you are. Good Luck.

It depends on what everyone else is wearing, and the setting that the photos will be taken at.
A lot of family portraits these days are done with a color scheme, for example- everybody wears blue jeans and a white shirt, whatever style fits them best.
See what your family is wearing and try to coordinate with them. For a white background, I’d recommend dark colors. You want to contrast against the background as much as possible.
Wearing the same color shirt and pants can give you a nice finished look.

depending on many things… your hair color? skin color (if white, do you have a pinkish tone? if so, greens will help counteract that, etc.). That’s what I do, use complimentary colors. Stay away from distinct patterns. hope this was helpful!

Because the color of the background is white, you do not need to worry about whether the outfit you choose will clash with the background. Just pick a color that looks good with your skin tone and you will be fine. I have a feeling your brother and dad will wear dockers and button-up shirts. You and your mum should pick out some nice spring dresses that do not clash. Remember that some day you will take your future beau home with you and he will see that picture hanging on the wall, so be careful not to pick something that is too trendy. If one of you chooses a patterned dress, make sure the other has a solid color, so the patterns will not fight each other.

As you say: "I want to look nice" – and I agree!
So wear something that makes you look good and feel good, do not worry too much about the colours.
You can worry about the colours if it is shot in B&W, but really, it is not such a big issue in colour.
You want to look good in the photo, in clothes that compliment you – that is the priority.
As long as you fit in with the rest – e.g. do not dress informal if the rest are dressed informal.
People will remember how stunning you look in "that dress", not what colour it is.

In my opinion, in front of white background, slightly darker, separating plain colors looks better. If you have weight issues, depending on the situation you might want to blend in with the background color. Black on black for example. You may also want to underline some nice features like eye color, hair etc with the color you are wearing but I think the bottom line is to keep it simple.

Personally I would avoid colors like bright red, orange or combination of these type of colors with their contrasts since digital cameras may not render these as beautifully or as accurate as other colors.

Remember you will keep this picture forever so try not to make a time statement by wearing something that is only in summer of 2010, if you know what I mean. So simple and plain works best. You want attention on the people not on the clothes. Also some photographers use same colors, or even the same type of clothing for family members to emphasize that "these people are connected and family".

Having said that, I think you should do what makes you feel good about it. Nothing like a natural and confident portrait at the end. Dress up, look in the mirror… When you say "oh yes, I look gooooood" that’s it. :)

I hope it goes well for you.
