A freelance photographer starts with experience as a staffer or assistant for an established freelancer. You begin when you have the experience and expertise to offer a service with full knowledge that you will understand and deliver as expected.

by taking pictures for events. volunteering your time and photos and building up your portfolio. when you have good feedback ,clients, and referrals then you should be off to a great start. after a little of that then you can start charging more and applying to companies

Hey there…I can’t even ready your username so you are going to be called Lucéé, with major emphasis on the céé.

Now, you say you want to be a freelance photographer, huh?

Well, it just happens that freelance photography is right up my alley, Lucéé. There are a variety of things you must undergo in order to be a freelance photographer, so let’s get started. Shall we!?

Well, first of all, you are going to need a camera….I’m going to assume you already have one because you are a girl and you got to get your facebook photos uploaded everyweek of you and your girls when go bar hopping at Bennie’s. So, first step accomplished.

Next, you are going to have to become an arrogant (expletive) who thinks they see the world differently from everyone else, similar to M. Night Shamylan. Why do you need to be this way, you ask Lucéé? Well, it’s because that’s what it takes to be a photographer. Think about it. When you are at a photo gallery, and you comment about how beautiful a picture is someone will starting rambling outloud about what is wrong with the picture, imply that you are a dumbass, and then he or she will finish off with a comment about his or her awesome Mac computer. Then when they walk away, you curse them in your mind thinking about what kind of sick person acts like that and has to ruin a good moment. But then it hits you, they are either a graphic designer, photographer, or video editor.

Now, you must adopt this terrible personality if you are going to be a photographer. You see, Lucéé, think about how many photography friends you had in school. NONE! That’s because photography majors have no friends. When you’re trying to shoot some b-ball with your friends, or go dancing with your girls, all the photography kids were like, "I just got to capture the world. I’m busy." They end up missing out on all the normal college activities. They never have walks of shame, they never wake up naked in a strange place they don’t know. Without experiencing these, they feel alone, and become angry. This anger, and rude personality that they portray helps them deal with society in their own special way. Whenever you walk around on campus, they are setting up their photo subjects, and if you ask them what they’re trying to capture, they just brush you off rudely. They act as if you wouldn’t ever understand. That’s just their way of coping with all the stress they undergo in life.

Photographers have no people skills. They have to learn to hide behind their camera and capture the world from the outside. You see, Lucéé, I don’t consider photography a job. I see it as a curse. A curse of confused, lost souls capturing the world they want a part of, but don’t know how to get it, because they can’t interact with society properly. The pictures they take show what their lives could be like, and they reach for it, but they just don’t get it. They keep taking more and more pictures until they forget what life is all about.

Now, I have realized this entire time that I really have not answered your question, and you are probably thinking, "MikeyJamJams, like wtf, I just want take pics I don’t need to hear all this!" But yes, you do need to hear all this Lucéé. I apologize. It’s just that you got me so carried away with this. I still look back at my college years and feel bad for those photography majors. They missed out on so much. I don’t want the same to happen to you.

There as many ways to begin as there are photographers. You do need to have a few things though 1) Rock solid images in a diverse portfolio with unique ideas and some long term projects if your photojournalism. 2) Really good people skills and the ability to be passionate about your work and to sell yourself. 3) The drive to keep on going and to follow up and keep in touch with a lot of people. 4) Networking skills. 5) Perhaps most importantly you need to be able to find a niche withing photography, something that makes you unique in your work.

Beyond that start with smaller publications, pitching ideas in your a photojournalist, if your a wedding photographer networking is probably most important look for wedding ads on craigslist. Good luck.
