I am having trouble finding a good lens for indoor concert photography that isn’t too expensive. I have a Canon Rebel XT. The Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS lens is so sweet, but if I were going to spend over $1000 on a lens it would be in the L series. What is a good third party lens comparable to this one?
Technically the 17-55 is "L" quality, but they won’t give it that designation since it doesn’t fit their film cameras.
Tokina makes a nice 12-24, but it’s only an f/4. Of course it trades a better wide angle for less zoom.

Sigma makes this 24-70mm F/2.8 that is pretty good….

And this 18/55mm f/2.8 that rates pretty good as well.

If you can afford to get away from zoom lenses, Canon has the 50mm f/1.4 for around $350. Great lens. The f/1.8 is arounf $100. Great bargain.

The Canon 50mm at either 1.4 or 1.8 is a great choice.
the 1.4 is more expensive but is built better.
the 1.8 is a bargain at only about $80.
unless you’re a pro, you probably wont notice the difference in image quality or miss the extra .4 stop in the more expensive lens.
Don’t forget to protect all your lenses with UV filters!
