I want to get an in home studio set up and I really don’t know what to get! I am fairly new to photography (just started classes) but I would like to get a somewhat cheap set up to practice at home with my kids and friends kids etc… My goal eventually is maternity, newborn, children etc… so I would need a portrait setup. What brand is good and are there any good sets? I obviously already have a dslr. Oh, and what lens is best for these type of portraits? I would assume a zoom, but what lengths?
Thanks!

I would check the guys over at calumetphoto.com out. I bought two of their Genesis 400 lights. On the SELDOM occasion I’ve had to call them the support has been outstanding.

Alien Bees are also good, but they have some deceptive marketing which makes me not like them as much…..but that’s more based on principle…I’ve bought products from them and their service is top notch as well. Actually, now would probably get a good time to scoop up an Alien Bee used on eBay or somewhere like fredmiranda.com in the buy/sell section. They are beginning to distribute their new Einstein light and I’m seeing a lot of alien bees on a forum I frequent at not so bad prices.

Don’t forget that you will also need a way to trigger the lights once you get them. Alien Bees has the cybersyncs. I owned them for a while and LOVED them. Great product and you can use them with other brands of lights as well.

an interfit ex150 mkII is possibly a place to start, it comes with two flash heads, a softbox, umbrella, the stands and of course the cords. its a tad over £200 at jessops, and on jessops.com

the only thing it doesnt have is a backdrop or any kind of stand for the backdrop, so you’ll have to get them separately.

good luck with the studio work!!

AlienBees offers several kits at a very decent price.

http://www.alienbees.com/packages.html has a list of several of there packages with everything from beginner packages to more advanced packages. I did several searches on reviews of the company before dealing with them and everything I read was very positive.
