Large off camera light source (ie flash & softbox) VERY CLOSE to the subject. Subject far away from the background. That way the light falls off rapidly and the background shouldn’t get light on it. Having it a dark colour helps but is not essential.
Any stray light falling towards the background should be flagged off using dark card/cloth. Max sync speed to kill anu ambient light.
This one;

was shot with a dark backdrop, 60" umbrella camera right, gridded snoot behind & to left of model. Used a D300 & RF-602 wireless triggers to fire flashes, aperture f8, shutter speed 1/250.
