Five students of SLS Montessori and High School won awards for their work in the Bangkok Asia Pacific Mural Contest at the Pakistan National Commission for UNESCO Awards and Certificates Distribution Ceremony.
The event was held at the National Institute of Science and Technical Education in Islamabad on May 18, 2010. The students are Osama Mehmood Alvi, Muhammad Ammar Alvi, Kinza Nasir, Danyaal Shehzad and Hassan Shehzad.
Director UNESCO Islamabad, Dr. Warren Mellor was the chief guest.
The event started with the recitation of the Quran, a Naat and was followed by several inspirational and witty performances by students on topics such as protecting biodiversity, sustainable development and social activism with national songs being sung in between performances.
The four competitive projects were the Mitsubishi Asian Childrens Enikki Festa 2008-09, the 15 Kanagawa Biennial World Childrens Art Exhibition, the UNESCO Photo Contest for Promoting Gender Equality in Education and the Education for Sustainable Development 2008 Asia Pacific Mural Contest.
The director of SLS, Mrs. Asiya Talha was awarded a shield from UNESCO and ASPnet for SLSs continued projects with them.
Dr. Mellor was very pleased with the students work and said he had learnt more about UNESCOs work by these students than he had in all those years of sitting through UNESCO board meeting in Paris. He said Activism is not just about learning about an issue, its doing something about the issue and I have had the honour of working in wonderful places like Pakistan.
