An exploration of what makes a truly great photograph. This episode relives the journeys that produced some of the “greatest paper movies” ever, including Robert Frank’s odyssey through 50s America & William Klein’s one-man assault on the sidewalks of N.Y.

The three decades from the late 1950s onwards was the real golden age of photographic journeys. This episode relives the journeys that produced some of the “greatest paper movies” ever, including Robert Frank’s odyssey through 50s America and William Klein’s one-man assault on the sidewalks of New York. It also examines the arrival of colour as a credible medium for “serious” photographers, as controversial at the time as Dylan going electric. Contributors include legendary photographers like William Klein, William Eggleston, Robert Adams, Joel Sternfeld, Joel Meyerowitz and artist Ed Ruscha.

The 8×10 camera uses film, not plates. 8×10″ film is readily available (‘tho the range of different films is reduced from what it once was).

I still love 35ml B&W precisely because it brings down the focus, which suits themes of intimacy and close knowing in my work. I love large format works and vibrant colours in other peoples though. 8×10 colour plates must be bloody hard to get now,

Ovation bought the rights to a BBC series “The Genius of Photography” and are only allowing a fraction of it to be viewed here. I first saw the full version on YouTube but Ovation enforced its removal – so I’m not sure we should get too grateful here.
