Hello.. I’m starting a photoimaging course late next month, i am wanting to persue photography as a career… I need a nice well quality camera… I would love a slr one, but they’re all very expencive just to begin with… Im looking for something that is atleast under $500…
Any ideas?? Thanks.
Cameras like the Nikon p90 give a good mid range between a DSLR and a high end point and shoot.
Although the p90 isn’t the best its the only one I’ve shot on of that type (I use DSLRs pretty much always).
There are many "prosumer" cameras out at the moment too so google those a little.
Also have a look at this link.

Most seem to be in your price range there.
All of theme a really good cameras, have a look at the reviews for what sounds the most well rounded for you.
Sorry if it doesn’t help you, Good luck with the course.

Well, I started off with a Canon Ixus S100, it is a rather old clunky thing that was the original Canon Ixus camera. Given it’s almost completely automated settings, it takes surprisingly good photographs. However, as a career camera, the S100 would not be a very good choice. I then moved on to the Canon PowerShot A1000IS. The PowerShot models feature more customizable settings in aperture and exposure, deemed semi-professional like a cross between compact and DSLR. Currently I use a Nikon CoolPix P6000. It is indeed a fine camera (features GPS) and easy to get used to. One annoying bit is that the built-in flash has to be manually raised. Also, depending on what sort of photographs you are taking, you may have to see what requirements your field needs; be it something with a powerful zoom level for wildlife photography or a lens capable of extreme close-ups for macro photography.
