I’m In Seventh grade. I want to start photography. I basically want to do what the pros do. I wouldn’t photograph people, I would do landscapes. Whats a good, affordable camera? Could I just use a digital camera?
By a didgital camera, I mean like a rectangle, small one. Not one of those HUGE honkin ones. lol
I found this version.

Canon PowerShot SD1100IS

Would that work?

Good for you… 7th grade is a great time to start (the earlier the better)!

I’m going to assume that you’re talking about a digital point and shoot… which is perfectly fine for practicing lighting and composition.

Later on, get yourself a SLR or DSLR… to keep costs down you can find decent used ones on Craigslist. Learn how to use the manual features… this will give you more control (depth of field, motion blur, etc.)!

P.S. With landscapes, you really want to watch the lighting… perfect lighting is what makes them most effective. (Ansel Adams was a very patient man!)

Edit: The Canon Powershot SD1100IS is a digital point and shoot… see what I said above.

Digital yes – by all means.

Suggestion is that you get a Digital SLR. I wouldn’t consider any brand other than Canon or Nikon. You can start with one of the entry level body models but any other accessories you buy – flash, lens etc.. will be portable to higher end camera bodies when you move up.

Canon Rebel XT or Nikon D40 are examples of digital SLRs.

Before I got my huge Nikon camera, I had the Canon PowerShot SD1000.
It’s an excellent point and shoot camera and it got me into photography indefinitely. I got plenty of compliments on my pictures from using that camera and it’s what really got me started.
    Best of luck :)

You really just need to learn about lighting. That’s literally what the word photography means. Then work on depth of field (what’s in focus). Just practice. What I would do is take pictures and right notes about the settings I used for that picture, and then I know what to do in that setting from then on. Any camera will do for a beginner, even a film one. Get yourself some black and white film and let ‘er rip. Practice angles, shadows, etc. Watch how to video’s on youtube.com. The more you do that the more you’ll instinctivley know and you can upgrade accordingly. You don’t need an expensive camera at all. Good luck!!
