I am writing a career paper for english and I want to be a photographer. For my paper I need to know how much all my equipment will cost to be a portrait photographer.

Anything from a few pence/cents for bulldog clips and gaffer tape through to many thousands for camera equipment.

Here is a very very rough list of what you would require in a reasonable studio.
You can do the research on pricing.

2 x professional standard cameras (either Dslr or medium format)
Range of lenses from wide to medium telephoto
4-6 strobe lights
Reflectors, umbrellas, softboxes, snoots etc
stands
tripod
backgrounds (at least 3 or 4)
background stands
props ranging from basic chairs and stools/posing boxes to whatever you want.
Computer, editing and studio management programmes
printer(s) – top quality if producing your own prints.

I am sure there is a load more stuff but that is what I can think of off the top of my head.

Figure on 30-40k absolute minimum to fully equip a studio.
The cameras and lighting equipment alone will set you back around 10-20k depending on what you get.

Honestly… it just depends on how much you want to spend. The first key to being a good photographer is to understand the fundimentals of taking good photographs. Spend $20 and get a good book. From there you can do a pretty decent job with a inexpensive camera.

From there the sky is the limit. to get really serious you probably need a good digital SLR camera and a lense or two. This will set you back $500+. You can easily spend $10K on a professional telephoto lense. But even that won’t make you a good photographer if you haven’t mastered the basics.

In the hand of a competent professional photographer the only expenditure would be a cheap camera.

Around $10,000-$30,000. That includes all the lenses, lighting, camera bodies, bags, cases, flashes, cards, cords, wires, cleaning supplies you will be taking with you at all times.

This is depending on what field of photography you are in.

Some camera bodies alone cost $32,000 bucks.

    Cheers,

There is no answer that will encompass every aspect of photography.

A nature photographer needs a good tripod, a few bodies and several high quality telephoto lenses. Add in a good computer for processing and the software…you’re around $12k.

Someone who works strictly on location doing portraits can spend around $7k and have practically everything they need. Of course that is buying mostly used things (which I suggest strongly, especially lenses).

For studio work…well…the sky is the limit. By the time you have a building, lights, backdrops, multiple bodies, lenses, and so on you could have easily spent over $100k….not counting the ongoing costs of owning the building itself.

There are some people who think you have to have top quality gear all the way around to be worth anything as a photographer. That is SO far from the truth. Like any other art, a good artist can make what they have work. There is a pro shooter for a magazine that uses point and shoot cameras. I think the model he uses is around $500 each and he keeps a few of them on hand as he works in volatile environments.

I start learning photography lately, and I’ve found that besides of a camera people still need some other accessories to take a pic professionally.
