We can’t afford to hire a photographer to do our complete wedding and reception. So we were thinking about going in when the studio is open and just having a portrait taken. Do other people do this for their wedding? Will a photographer do this, and if so, how much would you estimate (obviously every place will be different) just a single portrait like this would cost? Thanks!
Of course. A professional photographer is professional and should be able to handle this request. They might even be willing to do the shoot on location at the church you will be using. You’ll have to work out those specifics with the photographer.
What I do is ask the bride and groom if they want to do some of the formal shots early. If they have no problem seeing each other before the ceremony, then we can get those out of the way, and it makes my and their lives less stressful. I’m not rushing around, they are not as frantic, the guests are not waiting a long time at the reception.
I would charge the same price as a two person portrait session. Again, you’ll have to ask the photographer you go with what they propose.

Yes, like any other business they cater to their customers. You might want to price a minimum coverage package when you talk to them too.

Yes, that’s an engagement photo, commonly used for the newspaper announcements.
Call around your local studios to ask for their rates.

I used to work for a studio.
If you seriously absolutely can not afford a wedding photographer then you might think about placing an ad on http://www.craigslist.org/ in your area (the default city for this link is San Fransisco) for a student photographer to shoot your wedding really inexpensively. You wouldnt expect anything fantastic out of it, but if you could even get a dozen decent shots of the ring exchange and the kiss, it would be worth it.

i know your pain, im a photographer, but dont have any colleagues. When i got married i called around too, all had expensive packages. Finally i went on craigslist and put an Ad in, asking for a amautre photographer, and told them to make a bid, for around 5 hours of photography, and they had to have a portfolio. I also said that i would not consider any photographer that had no bid. I ALSO said, i was on a very tight budget and looking for just a CD with pictures so that i could print later.
I got a great photographer for an awesome price.
I know not what you asked, but maybe this can help or give you ideas, congrats.
