On stock photo websites?
I know the answer is probably "it depends", but I would love to hear from people who is selling or has sold stock photos online. Can you really earn a decent amount of money? And what is the best website to submit your photos?

Yes, you can

It’s not difficult, but it requires a bit of committment: if you build a growing online portfolio, you will earn proportionately; after a few months you can actually earn a decent amount of money

I am selling my photos at many websites, see list here: www.microstockphoto.co.uk
The first one on the list (shutterstock) is the best – well worth applying and passing the test;
istock is the second best, but requirements are higher, so it’s not a good candidate to join first;
Try also dreamstime

the last ones in the list are not actually worth the time unfortunately

    Sorry, I have no idea. But either way, as I always think, if there is a will, there is a way. If you really love photography, and live your life doing it, you will always see that money will come to you. Passion is way more important than getting a job that brings in money.

    Yes you can and there a number of people who do.
    BUT, you have to approach it as you would any business. you have to dedicate time and effort.
    To make the big bucks you have to be constantly (daily) updating with new work and deleting those which are out of date or not selling.
    you also need to be with a number of different agencies/sites

    Check out this guy http://www.arcurs.com/ who is one of the successful ones and has a whole team and dedicates himself to stock work.

    By decent, I’m guessing you want to support yourself on the earnings. Its pretty hard, and getting harder. You have to have a large number of images, spread around, well tagged, that are better than the vast majority of the stuff out there.You have to post to sites which will pay a reasonable fee, such as Getty (the real one, not the flickr getty) and Corbis. (Full disclosure: I haven’t been accepted at either one.) These sites require that they accept your work, you can’t just upload and sell like you can on shutterstock and the like. You can get started at the lower echelon sites though. But understand they’ll pay you a very small fee ( a quarter to a dollar, which is great if the image is used 500 times, but realistically this is not going to happen.) Also read the contract VERY CAREFULLY – some of these sites do not pay you until you have earned $500. This could take a while. You also have to set your work above the sea of wannabes out there just to get it seen. So its hard.

    And all that was said above about running it as a business is true. I’m outta bed at 4:00 am and on the net by 5:00, looking into who wants what work today and sending stuff off. I have to do the books for the business, promotion, editing, research, then off to the day job because I am no longer earning enough to be comfortable and able to continue replacing equipment, going to where I need to shoot, et cetera. I have no less requests for work, but the price offered has so decreased in the last two years I refuse a lot of them. I refuse to sell a picture for a quarter. Not gonna happen. Its way too much work, and I had to sacrifice too much to learn how to do this. If it comes to that, I’d rather keep it for myself.
