I have searched online and I want to stay away from Istockphotos.com it seems like a big joke. Do I just send emails to magazine companies I want to sell photos to? Or what? What does it take to start making money off photos? Don’t respond with, take a good photo. My question isn’t about the photo, it’s how to get my photo to different magazines to sell!
If you are in the UK then buy the book The Freelance Photographers Handbook, there is a similar tome in the US but can’t find my copy at the moment.
This lists most of the magazines on the market with contact details and what their basic requirements are.
Alternatively, go along to your nearest big magazine store with a pen and notepad and jot down the address and the name of the picture editors or art directors and write to them detailing what shots you have and asking where to send samples etc.
It is just a case of marketing yourself properly.
If you don’t want to use istock or other micro sites then look at the bigger or more specialist sites.

and here;s the rub with commercial photos.
you have realized that taking great photos is only 10% of the skills needed to be a sucessful commercial photographer. you should educate yourself on marketing and advertising and contract negotiation. but thats just the bginning of it. it takes more than that to sell photos. as you get into it you will realize that.
